In this blog post you will learn how to work directly with Google to fix your Google business summary, the brief editorial text seen in various places on Google.
If you already know the who, what, where, when and why of Google’s editorial summaries, you can go directly to learn how you can request an edit of your Google business summary.
What Is a Google Business Summary?
A Google business summary, also known as a Google editorial summary or business description, is the brief synopsis of a business that shows up in various places on Google.
Who Writes the Google Business Summary?
According to Google, their writers “compile these short descriptions, which give you a quick snapshot of a popular business.” (source)
Where Does the Google Business Summary Appear?
The editorial summary will be displayed in many places where people find your business on Google, including:
- Google Maps listing
- Google+ Business Pages reviews section, and
- Knowledge Graph listing on organic Google search results for your business name
Why Is My Google Business Summary Important?
Think about it: Google is the #1 search engine in the world and this is Google’s own editorial statement about your business. You want to make sure that it is at the very least an accurate description. Ideally, it should also correctly prioritize the information you want potential customers to see. Consider the editorial summary an important and objective description of your business from an authoritative source.
How Can I Edit My Google Business Summary?
Editing of this editorial statement may only be made by direct request to Google via their Incorrect summary on business page form.
It is recommended that you, or the person/agency who manages your Google My Business account, submit the form. Best practices for response from Google include:
- Provide accurate and complete responses to questions
- For the “Why is this an incorrect summary?” entry be sure to include the factual inaccuracies and how they should be corrected.
When Can I Expect a Response from Google?
That entirely depends on:
- Whether or not they see your request worthy of a response, and
- How busy they are with the volume of change requests
Editorial summaries with factual inaccuracies that are provable from other online sources will generally get a response, so if you choose to have Google contact you by phone, you will receive a phone call within a few days to a couple of weeks. Any longer than that indicates you didn’t meet the criteria for response.
Response does not necessarily mean your description will be edited. Typically the response will ask for clarification of the inaccuracies and how they should be edited. Upon verification, inaccuracies will be edited.
