AI Search Optimization for Hotels is becoming an increasingly important part of how lodging properties are found online. For years, getting discovered largely meant showing up in Google search results. That still matters, but travelers are increasingly using AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI features to research destinations, compare lodging options, and decide where to stay.
Instead of typing a few keywords into Google and working through a list of websites, travelers can now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google’s AI features, and other AI-powered tools much more specific questions:

“Where should we stay for a romantic weekend near Asheville?”
“Find me a quiet bed and breakfast with a great breakfast and easy access to downtown.”
“What are some family-friendly cabins near Eureka Springs?”
The response may not simply be ten blue links. Increasingly, AI systems assemble information from multiple sources and provide a direct answer.
That introduces a new challenge for lodging properties: does the technology understand enough about your property to include you in the conversation?
From SEO to GEO
You are probably already familiar with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the work involved in helping search engines understand your website and connect it with relevant searches.
Now you may start hearing another acronym: GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization.
GEO is an emerging term for improving how information is understood, retrieved, cited, and used by generative AI systems.
That does not mean SEO is going away. In fact, Google says the same fundamental SEO practices continue to apply to its AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special piece of “AI schema” that suddenly guarantees inclusion in an AI-generated answer.
Instead, GEO adds another consideration to what makes a good website: making the information about your business as clear, accurate, consistent, and machine-readable as possible.
Your Website Needs to Explain More Than Your Name and Address
What is AI Search Optimization for Hotels? A lodging property is a collection of details.
What type of property is it? Where is it located? What makes it different? What amenities are available? What type of experience can guests expect? What policies apply? What nearby attractions or activities are relevant?
Humans can often piece this information together while browsing several pages of a website.
Computers need a little more help.
One of the tools available to us is structured data: information embedded within a website that helps machines understand what the content actually represents. Google describes structured data as a standardized way of providing explicit information about a page and classifying its content.
For a lodging business, that means we want important property information to be more than words scattered throughout pages. Wherever practical, we also want that information organized in a way that search engines and other systems can interpret reliably.
InsideOut Has Updated Our Property Profile Technology
This is an area we have already begun addressing in the websites we build.
InsideOut’s Property Profile provides a centralized way for us to organize important information about a lodging property. We have now expanded that system with AI search and GEO in mind, allowing us to provide more complete, consistent, machine-readable information about the property behind the scenes.
The updated Property Profile is now included with new InsideOut website builds.
For existing InsideOut websites, the expanded Property Profile is available as a website upgrade. Updating an existing site requires more than simply installing a new feature. We need to review the information currently available about the property, add and configure the expanded profile, and make sure the information being provided to search engines and AI systems is accurate and consistent with the website.
Why This Matters for Independent Lodging Properties
This shift may be especially important for independent hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts, cabins, and vacation properties.
Large hotel brands are relatively easy for an AI system to identify. There is an enormous amount of information about them online.
Independent properties often compete on much more specific qualities: a particular location, an unusual amenity, a distinctive breakfast, proximity to an attraction, a peaceful setting, historic character, pet-friendly accommodations, or simply an experience that is very different from a chain hotel.
Those details matter when someone asks an AI assistant a specific travel question.
If those distinguishing characteristics are clearly represented on your website and supported by consistent information elsewhere online, an AI system has better information available when determining what your property is and when it may be relevant.
If they are missing, buried, outdated, or contradictory, there is less for the system to work with.
GEO Is Not a Magic Button
There is an important caveat.

No website company, SEO provider, or GEO service can guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend your property when someone asks where to stay.
AI-generated responses can depend on the question being asked, the sources available to the system, location, current web information, third-party websites, reviews, and many other factors.
Structured data is only one part of that picture.
Good GEO therefore looks a lot like good digital marketing already should:
Accurate property information. Helpful website content. Strong technical SEO. Consistent business listings. Useful information about amenities and experiences. Current information rather than outdated copy. A website that search engines can crawl and understand.
The difference is that we are now thinking not only about how a page ranks, but also about how accurately a machine can understand the business behind that page.
Building for the Next Generation of Search
Traditional Google search is not disappearing tomorrow, and we are not abandoning SEO.
We are expanding the definition of what a well-built hospitality website needs to do.
A modern website should work for guests. It should work for search engines. And increasingly, it should make the facts about your property understandable to the AI systems travelers are beginning to use for research, planning, and recommendations.
Our recent Property Profile update is one step in that process, and we will continue developing it as the technology and best practices evolve.
The way travelers search is changing. We want the websites we build and manage to be ready for it.
